I have never lost my love of Coherent (Policy) Governance® and saw first-hand what a positive difference it makes for a district and its Board of Education. The two of you had a major impact on my professional career as a 22-year school superintendent. You both remain role models for me.
You and Randy did a fine job helping us along our path to being an effective Board. You two are ever patient and wise. Because you are educators at base and your clients are boards, you understand our challenges. You are also consummate teachers knowing when to push, when to rephrase and when to pull back. You are guides with a goal and a road map. My “cats” have made progress. But this type of work is rarely a straight line forward. A group of people chosen by a public election to do serious and critical work for the common good will always be challenged by both the work and the group dynamic. – At least I think we function better than the Congress.
My conclusion is that this process takes away a lot of the distraction and confusion that other processes have and sometimes create. It lives up to it name in that it is coherent!
Linda and Randy provide far more than a process and a check off list. Their continuing presence and involvement are essential to our district “staying the course”. Meeting with them several times a year also gives us a counseling session as well as helping us keep our focus.
As an Executive Director, I liked this governance model for its clarity in separating the responsibilities between the CEO and the Board. I appreciated the creativity the model allowed to achieve the Results and the continuous evaluation by the Board on already established criteria.
As a Board member, I like the structure the model provides, the concise, timely information required and the built-in safeguards that protect the organization from a renegade CEO.
I also value the wisdom and counsel from the Aspen Group. They have the experience and knowledge to help with a variety of issues that plague Boards and CEOs and their approach through this model is very effective.

The Board is very satisfied with the Coherent Governance Model and things are working better than ever for Enduris. We will have our best year ever this year both in governance and in operation. Things are running on all cylinders at Enduris.
Enduris Washington is a property and liability risk sharing pool comprised of 500 special purpose districts in the state of Washington. Enduris implemented the Coherent Governance® model in 2007 and it has been an overwhelming success ever since. Enduris has been growing in leaps and bounds since 1998 and the Board became bogged down with what their specific role was in the growing organization. There were seven differing views from seven different Board members. Since the Board meets only once every three months, it was imperative that the Board determined what role they play as soon as possible.
The answer for Enduris was the Aspen Group International’s Coherent Governance Model. The role of the Board is now well defined in the policies the Board developed within the Coherent Governance model guidelines. The policies are monitored annually and provide information on Operational Expectations and Results so the entire Board, including the Chief Executive Officer, is informed about the operations and progress toward goals.
Enduris would highly recommend the AGI Coherent Governance model to any Board driven organization whether dysfunctional or not; for the model provides specific direction with little ambiguity for a highly efficient governance system. Enduris gives it a well-deserved rating of five stars.
I am greatly pleased with the work that Aspen Group has done with supporting the development of a strong Board-Superintendent relationship. The Coherent Governance® structure clearly delineates the roles and responsibilities of the superintendent and board to eliminate confusion, which impacts instruction in the classroom. Aspen Group has helped to keep the focus on educating our children. Under their guidance, Harrison has diligently developed and revised strong Board policies, which have added value to the increases in our student achievement data. Aspen Group has challenged the Board of Education and district staff to seek multiple ways to measure a quality education for every child in Harrison.
With a new Board, AGI has guided Harrison to seek creative ways to improve student outcomes. While working with Randy and LInda, our Board and staff have been challenged to thoroughly assess our values and beliefs. Undoubtedly, we have adopted quality governing policies that are measurable and consistently monitored to determine the impact on student achievement. The connectedness between what happens on our Board of Education and in our classrooms is clearly noted in our mission. AGI has been a participant in the entire process of moving Harrison from Good to Great.
The process has been thought provoking, soul searching, demanding, sometimes daunting, and very rewarding. Expectations, priorities and assessments are defined for the Board and for the Superintendent and staff, and transparent to the community…You challenged us, time and again, to do our best work, and you were honest with us when you thought we had not done so. The resultant governance structure is a model that we are proud of, but one we will continue to improve. We are most grateful to you for your work with us.
Our district has been working with AGI Aspen Group for almost seven years now, and the result of our efforts is invaluable to our Board. It was a huge commitment, but the process was very worthwhile. Our time spent with Aspen Group is very focused. They help guide our board so that we are able to have honest, necessary, and open conversations.
Since adopting Coherent Governance, our district has role clarity for the Board, the Superintendent, and all of our employees.
