Addressing Equity in Policy
We have been following equity work across the country with former and current clients as well as other schools districts. Really good work is being done!
- For you to consider:Four existing OE policies updated for focus on equity – Global OE, Personnel Administration, Learning Environment, and Instructional Program.
- Some districts are engaged in crafting equity language – without committing those values to governing policy. Values/expectations for the district’s practices comes from the board as “policy” direction – not adjunct documents. That is governing by policy – and it demands Superintendent accountability through monitoring and evaluation.
- Some OE policies have been developed for equity alone becoming very long and very operationally strategic. Again, this removes Superintendent accountability for “interpretation” and actions to achieve compliance. The Board is moving into Superintendent work. Boards must approve – as reasonable – the Superintendent’s reasonable interpretations and indicators thereby giving governance “values” direction and assuring accountable “operational” work.
Yes, equity is a HUGE issue. We believe it is imperative to remain consistent with governing policy and work this system for what was intended – board authority and staff accountability – without suspending this system to dive deep.
